In collaboration with Basso Bikes and Fizik. It’s a cliché to say that a photo is worth a thousand words, and a misleading one, too. Sometimes you don’t need a thousand words. Sometimes one will do: ‘Badlands’. Love Hinault for his accomplishments, but he’s a cranky man. I think he just needs to get over it. I think one of the best if not the best Australia produced was Russell Mockridge, he rode the tour with the Luxembourg team, With Charlie Gaul as team leader. Although he sustained a nasty gash to his thigh early in the race He finished the tour regardless earning the respect of the French including one Louison Bobet, an increadable performance. He regularly beat track stars of the day notably Reg Harris, and even caused changes in the rules of the Paris rand Prix because he not only won the amateur title he was wild carded into the professional event and humiliated the pros by winning that as well. When he came home from the tour he realised he needed more stamina over the 21 days of the tour and took coaching from Sir Hubert Opperman to increase his stamina. He was on the cusp of returning to Europe in this improved condition when tragically he was killed during a race in Geelong. Who knows what he could have achieved, unfortunately we will never know. Another Australian who had similar abilities but unfortunately for certain reasons never achieved his true potential was Gary Clively. He could mix it with the best, even Merckx. Unfortunately he became dissolutiond with the way cycling is ruled by the peloton and it’s bosses but he showed he had the athletic ability to compete with the best.

Theses guys put in the miles when training early season training was about time on the bike, quite a lot of it was on their own, no drafting, but also no incentive to go too hard, most of it was on 42-16 60-70 RPM. From memory De Vlaemink did regular 400 km days training for Roubaix. It was about training the muscle and the capillaries to handle the loads early in the season. Then upping the game later on. Riders from back then raced so much the racing was actually a part of the training. It was all about the bike no weight training just hard slog and mental toughness, the will to better Merckx also helped De Vlaemink was one of the few who felt Merckx was beatable. I also agree that it was a wasted interview, it seems the questions are off the top of her head. When you get the opportunity to interview legends like him you have to do your homework and prepare beforehand meaningful questions, there is so much more that could of been learned.

Placed 3rd in his first TDF, if not riding it with bronchitis he would have won in 1984, gave up the lead as ordered to by his team to help his teammate Hinault win his 5th TDF in 1985, won the TDF in 1986, shot and missed 1987 and 1988, won 1989 TDF and still holds the record for the fastest time trial in TDF history overcoming a 50 second deficit on the last day, won it it again in 1990, was always in contention always rode from the front, no one rode a bike and looked as good or so natural on a bike with a VO2 max of 92, unheard of. He easily could have won 7 to 10 TDF if not for being shot, getting lead poisoning etc. He was the most talented TDF rider to ever straddle a bike. And was 100% clean, and won against riders, even in his day were on the juice.

LeMond VO2 max------92% ( Superman !) ; Armstrong VO2 max ----78%------ ARMSTRONG best Finish before doping ---- 36 th place..... LEMOND only finishes that low after 55 shotgun pellets have poisoned his body badly by 1993......without the shotgun accident, and without a corrupt race management team in 85 lying about Hinault being only 45 seconds behind Lemond---- in reality he was 5 minutes behind----- Lemond also wins in 85...... Then without shotgun pellets....,he wins in 87, 88, 91, 92, 93, 94, 95...... THE GOAT !
